Truly Giving Thanks

by Paulette Flynn, SHARE Executive Director

As I write, we are finalizing the counts for November and it is amazing to see what SHARE volunteers have accomplished! So far we have orders for close to 9,000 Thanksgiving Dinner Packages, plus all the rest of the monthly food. Imagine that!

In a time when so many people are struggling, there is one thing that can be counted on: the power of the community to help itself. SHARE is built on relationships of trust that allow volunteers to collect close to $4 million from food sales annually, and then those same volunteers distribute the food to approximately 8,000 households each month. These bonds of trust are more precious than gold and truly enrich the community.

I have started a new blog called Living Richly With SHARE. For me, nothing matches the richness of experience that comes from being part of the best volunteer-driven food buying club in America. Why? Because the volunteers who make SHARE happen each month do so from a commitment to serve the common good. What if everybody did this?

You can check out my blog at www.livingrichlywithshare.blogspot.com and read about how I used the October BIG Value Package as the center point of my purchasing for the Food Stamp Challenge. My family spent a week on the same food budget as if we received food stamps. We ended the week with food to spare, thanks to SHARE. As I think of all my reasons to be thankful this year, I certainly have our SHARE volunteers at the top of my list. They make it possible for thousands of families to save money on quality food.

I wish you and yours a peaceful Thanksgiving, blessed with good food and abundant happiness.
