For over 25 years, SHARE Food Buying Club has provided access to good, nutritious food at reduced cost throughout Wisconsin and parts of three surrounding states. Every month over 1,000 volunteers help roughly 8,000 families save 30-50% on food in 200 communities.
Our SHARE Cares Food Fund was established in late 2009 to help feed families in need during difficult economic times. As SHARE’s former Director of Finance and Administration, Sheila Salsman has been one of the fund’s biggest promoters: “It’s a great way to give back to the community because SHARE volunteers give so much. It’s a way to complete that circle.”
In the summer of 2010, Sheila was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. She has retired from SHARE to spend time with her family. In honor of Sheila’s retirement and to continue the spirit of generosity and selfless service that she brought to her work for so many years, the fund was renamed the Sheila Cares Food Fund in October 2010 (see video below). During SHARE’s 2009-2010 fiscal year, SHARE members and friends donated $25,766 to the fund, enabling the volunteer network to distribute over 1,000 food packages to families in need!
With today’s continuing difficult economic situation, hunger is a pressing concern for more and more families. Through SHARE’s Sheila Cares Fund, your donation can a) help feed a family in need and b) connect them with SHARE’s money-saving food buying club so they can stretch their food dollars as much as possible all year long.
Because of SHARE’s unique food distribution model, the value of donations to the fund are stretched by the amazing power of our volunteer network. Families in need are identified by SHARE volunteer teams, who are recognized as leaders for food security. Our volunteers have strong relationships not just with families in their communities, but also with other local organizations serving families in need.
There are four easy ways to donate:
1) Donate online using our secure donation page. Just use the fund drop-down box to select "SHARE's Sheila Cares Food Fund".
2) When ordering online, round up your order to the nearest dollar or enter in a specific amount you would like to donate. You will automatically receive a donation receipt for your records.
3) On Facebook, look up the “SHARE's Sheila Cares Food Fund” on Causes to make a donation and spread the word to your friends. You will receive a thank-you email for your donation.
4) Write a check payable to SHARE, PO Box 403, Butler, WI, 53007. Note “Sheila Cares Food Fund” in the memo line of your check. We will send you a receipt in the mail.
