The Caffeine Trampoline

Waking up in the morning can be a caffeine addict’s worst nightmare. The baby is screaming, the dog is waiting to be fed, your husband has already left for work, and you cannot find your other shoe. All you can think about is that first sip of coffee from your favorite extra large mug. Once you are able to just have one cup of coffee, you will be ready for what the day brings.

Caffeine is not only a “wake up call” in the morning—it affects the body in many other ways. First, it can affect your heart by raising your heart rate and blood flow. It also causes attentiveness. After that first cup, you are able to do your work and focus, but at the same time, you continue to tap your pen and shake your legs at your desk. This is because of caffeine.

If you are considered an all-day coffee drinker, you may not be able to get to sleep at night. Caffeine causes you to be more awake. As your body gets more used to caffeine, it wants more and more to get that jolt.

Caffeine is not only disguised by coffee, but can also be found in tea, chocolate and chocolate drinks, soft drinks and energy drinks. The top caffeinated drinks are espresso and regular coffee, Coca-Cola and Rockstar energy drink. Do you or your children drink any of these drinks?

For children, it’s important to limit caffeine. Bones are an important part of our bodies and to have strong bones, we need calcium. But highly caffeinated drinks like Coca-Cola can take calcium out of our bones. It is especially important for children to have healthy bones. The next time your preschooler begs for a super-sized soda, think about their developing bones and give them milk, water or juice.
