The Farmers' Market Experience

It’s a nice, sunny day and you’d like to take the kids somewhere. You notice a group of farmers selling their fruits and vegetables in a park. You decide to check it out. And you’re glad you did.

What you’ve discovered is a farmers’ market. Besides fresh fruits and vegetables, you find fresh baked goods, pickles, fresh herbs, eggs, honey and even flowers. You may see fruits and vegetables that are new to you. As you browse the produce, you notice that the farmers are happy to tell you all about their foods. They may offer samples. Want to know the difference between a Cortland and a Macintosh apple? You can taste both.

There are lots of benefits to shopping at a farmers’ market. The food you get is fresh—picked no more than a day or two earlier. If your timing is right, there may be a cooking demonstration, music or other fun activities. Kids love the farmers’ market because it’s an adventure. Plus, they can develop a new connection to the fruits and vegetables and will be much more willing to eat them. And you are helping support local farmers and building the local economy.

By shopping at the farmers’ market, you are also doing something good for the environment. Did you know that the fruits and vegetables in grocery stores have traveled an average of 1500 miles? No wonder fresh produce got so expensive when the gas prices went up!

Many farmers’ markets accept Quest and Link cards (food stamps). And if you quality for WIC or are a low-income senior over 60 years old, you may be eligible for free farmers’ markets vouchers. For more information, visit www.fns.usda.gov/wic or contact your local county extension office.

Here are some tips on shopping the farmers’ market. The fruits and vegetables that are available will change from week to week, based on the growing season. The best way to save money is to look for items that are just coming into season, and every farmer seems to have a ton of it. For the best selection, go early in the day. Or visit the market just before it’s ready to close when farmers will often make some great deals. Take your own canvas bags or baskets. Dress comfortably. And enjoy!
