Springing Into Action

by Paulette Flynn, SHARE Executive Director

If you are reading this, the calendar has already proclaimed that Spring, at last, has arrived. Soon there will be daffodils! We can only hope that the weather has caught on to the change of seasons, since it sometimes holds on to winter a lot longer than seems necessary. Just last night I had a dream about a warehouse full of volunteers chanting, “NO MORE SNOW!” And who can blame them after the messy snow that fell like a heavy, cold, wet blanket on SHARE Day in February?

What I still find remarkable after all these years in Wisconsin is the fortitude of SHARE volunteers to get the job done in all kinds of weather. Sub-zero? No problem. Flooding rain? We’ll take a new route. Icy roads? Just give us a little more time, but we’ll be there. I am so grateful for all of our wonderful SHARE volunteers who make this program work. You’re better than the US Mail! Whether you are a volunteer at your host site, the SHARE office or warehouse, you are the driving force behind everything we are able to accomplish.

February was another record-breaking month, as people continued to look for smart ways to save money on food. We distributed $278,836 worth of food, which generated savings of approximately $111,534 compared to grocery store prices.

If you are new to SHARE, I welcome you and encourage you to get involved at your host site. It is always nice to have another set of willing hands to help unload the truck or set up the distribution. Check with your host site leader for opportunities to make a difference. If you are a long-time SHARE member, this may be the time for you to renew your commitment to volunteer service. New member or old, I invite you to join me in thanking all the host site volunteers for their dedication to SHARE’s goal of bringing us together for food and community.

Happy Spring!
