What's In A Name

by Paulette Flynn, SHARE Executive Director

For almost 25 years now, SHARE volunteers have worked diligently to express the meaning of our name. Think about it: it takes a lot of people sharing their time and energy to make our monthly distributions work. It also takes people sharing the good news about the great savings on food to reach more people and keep the organization growing. If you haven’t told anyone lately about the value of SHARE, I encourage you to do so. Throughout our history, word of mouth has been the number one way people hear about SHARE.

That’s one of the things I really like about our organization. It is powered by the people who use the program. Sharing time to help with distribution or sharing your own experience of how SHARE stretches your food dollars fuels the engine that runs everything we do. It is this personal touch that keeps SHARE grounded in each host site community. Sharing is a natural expression of care and concern for our friends and neighbors.

Hospitality is another one of SHARE’s values. You can feel it at the host site when you pick up your food. This summer and fall, most host sites will be holding a 25th Anniversary Celebration! This means nearly 200 communities will celebrate this milestone, so be sure to ask your host site what’s happening at your location. It’s a great time to invite someone new to try SHARE. With 25 years of experience, we certainly have plenty to share, so be sure to tell a friend!
