Easy Ways To Cut Your Budget

In today’s economy, many families find that there just isn’t enough money to cover expenses. There are three basic options: increase income, decrease expenses, or a combination of the two. This month, we will focus on decreasing expenses. In my family, we make it a game and involve all family members. Here are a few ideas:

Eating In: Americans spend 40% of their food budgets on meals purchased away from home. Over the years, I have found that the food quality at restaurants and fast food places just isn't worth the money. With a little planning and a great organization such as SHARE, you can prepare gourmet meals at home for far less.

Specialty Drinks: Many of us visit the coffee shop on the way to work. But those little purchases add up. If you spend $4 on coffee every weekday, that totals $960 per year! Try making your coffee purchase only once or twice a week. Then you can invest in a good coffeemaker and quality beans.

Re-Sale Shops: These days, at thrift stores you can find name brand clothing and accessories for far less. Plus, you can find a lot of distinctive items not available in the big box stores.

Bargain Entertainment: Especially in the summertime, many communities have free events such as festivals, art shows, concerts and plays. Colleges and high schools often offer great entertainment at low cost. Many museums and galleries have a day of the week or month when admission is free or reduced. Plus, most local park departments offer a range of fun activities at great prices.

These tips only touch the surface. I’m sure your family can add many more to the list. Remember, it’s not about giving up everything you enjoy. It’s about meeting your needs and some of your wants in a money-smart way!
