Think Your Drink

UW-Extension Update, by Renee Vertin, R.D., of Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program, Washington County

How does your drink choice measure up?  If you choose milk several times a day, you’re feeding your body calcium and eight other essential nutrients.  Milk and milk-containing foods are good for our bones and teeth, and may also reduce our risk of some cancers, high blood pressure and obesity

Sadly, many of us Americans fall far short of the recommended intake:  more than half of our children do not get enough calcium.  Nine out of 10 women and seven out of 10 men fail to meet calcium requirements.

June Dairy Month is a good time to savor foods made with milk.  Try a new recipe (www.gotmilk.com , www.wisdairy.com or www.midwestdairy.com).  Watch for specials in your grocery store.  Go to some special events (like Breakfast on the Farm).  And remember to include milk as your thirst quencher year round!
