Food Safety Tips

UW-Extension Update by Jean Draeger, Nutrition Educator, Waukesha County Extension

December's UW-Extension Update includes useful food safety tips and hints everyone can use, everyday.

Four Food Safety Tips

How to Store Citrus Fruit

Keep Your Food Preparation Areas Clean!

  1. Wash your hands before you touch food, after handling raw meat and before you eat.

  2. Eat hot foods immediately. If you want to eat hot food later,
reheat it before you eat it.

  3. Eat cold foods at once or store them in the refrigerator until later.

  4. Foods that may be left at room temperature for a few days: breads, fresh fruit, cookies

Oranges  Will keep for one to two weeks at room temperature.
To keep longer, store in the refrigerator in a plastic bag.

Grapefruit  Will keep for two weeks at room temperature. Will keep for two months or more in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Lemons and Limes  Keep in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for one month or more.

Tangerine  Best if kept in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for about one month.

  • Use a clean dish cloth and hand towel everyday.

  • Wash sponges in the dishwasher or better yet – don’t use a sponge.

  • Wash dishes and eating utensils after every use.

  • Air dry your dishes – dish towels spread germs.

  • Wash counter tops and table tops with hot soapy water before and
    after preparing food.

  • Wash your hands before you handle food.
