You want to go on a picnic, but wonder if the weather will hold out. What should
you do? Have a picnic inside!
- Pack your picnic basket with low cost, edible delights in only the amounts you
are able to eat. Your menu doesn't have to include heated or grilled foods. (See
ideas below to use ready-to-eat foods from your SHARE package.)
- Keep cold foods cold. When the temperature of food, especially meat & dairy
foods, climbs above 40 degrees F. harmful bacteria multiply much more rapidly. To
steer clear of food borne illness, avoid keeping perishable foods at unsafe temperatures
for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90 °F). A refrigerator
thermometer placed in an insulated cooler also helps to ensure food safety.
- Check the weather again. If it's promising, head on out! If it's not, you can still
have an indoor picnic.
- If you have a cassette tape with nature sounds on it (birds calling, crickets chirping)
now is a good time to use it.
- Play an active, yet safe, indoor game with your children, grandchildren and friends.
- Here's a few ideas: play catch with a sponge ball, toss rings at a target, volley
a balloon back and forth, or use painter's masking tape to create a hopscotch on
your floor.
- Spread a blanket on the floor of a larger, open room.
- Wash your hands with soap and water (or use waterless soap in a pinch when outdoors).
- Arrange the place settings, set out the food and enjoy!
